Charles H. Loud was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, on November 20, 1858, the son of Cyrus and Betsey Loud. As a young man he read law under a local judge, and then turned his efforts to civil engineering. He was employed in the engineering corps building the branch line of the Northern Pacific Railroad from Livingston to Cinnebar.
